Are we still praying for the living victims of the Sutherland Springs shooting, the attack in New York City, the Las Vegas shooting, etc…? Or have we moved on? What can we really do to make a difference? Evil is always with us in this world, this is reality. It is not the gun that is evil but the heart of the shooter, it is not the Lowes rental truck that is evil but the heart of the driver, it is not the individual ingredients of the bomb that are evil but the heart of the maker & the detonator of it, it is not the knife that is evil but the heart of the wielder of it as a weapon etc. etc. etc. ….!
Many are diminishing & mocking a prayerful response to murderous attacks. So what can we do? Does prayer help? YES! Ia prayer all we have to offer? NO! Are there sensible protective actions to be implemented? YES, but only civil discourse will reveal those as we move forward. We must be prepared to protect & help those that are around us. What else can we do? Well, the Bible tells us to overcome evil with good – Romans 12:21! What does that look like in our culture today? I believe an answer & a plan of action is found in Micah 6:8 – “He has shown you, O man, what is good; And what does the Lord require of you But to do justly, To love mercy, And to walk humbly with your God”. We must truly value life and share that value with everyone we come in contact with. Will that stop heinous, evil acts of terrorism & murder? NO! But, the more we care for one another & treat each other justly & with respect, the better our world becomes! Light begins to shine in darkness.
Arguing & hatred over differing viewpoints (how we should respond), degrading comments & divisive attitudes over political power struggles (masquerading as concern for people) is not helping. These actions are only making things worse & giving cover for those with evil hearts & evil intentions. What can we do? Love one another, Communicate with one another in a civil manner, value every life, treat the outcast and downtrodden justly & live humbly with our God & we must teach our children these principles. We are in a battle for the hearts & minds of our generation! We must win this battle! Then, & only then, there is hope for overcoming evil!
